West
Monroe Kiwanis
Club
We
build a
better community by…
In
addition to meeting weekly for a good lunch, an excellent program, fun, and
fellowship (Tuesday’s at the West Monroe Convention Center at noon) our Club has achieved an impressive list of accomplishments.
During the past several months, the Kiwanis Club of West Monroe has:
Ø
“Adopted”
the Dixie Diehards (a group of mentally & physically handicapped
children’s t-ball league). We
acted as “Buddies” for several games and raised $25,000 to build a fully
handicapped accessible baseball field. In
one year the league has grown from 33 children to 51 children;
Ø
Worked
to raise funds to build developmentally appropriate playground equipment for
Crosley School (Pre-K ages 3, 4, & 5) at an approximate cost of $30,000.
Ø
Sponsored
a new, permanent exhibit at the Northeast Louisiana Children’s Museum (total
cost of $5,600);
Ø
Sponsored
a “Lane” at the YWCA’s Bowl for Kid’s Sake for Big Brothers/Big
Sisters;
Ø
Provided
financial support to: Cystic
Fibrosis Foundation, Boy Scouts & Girl Scouts, Salvation Army, the
Children’s Miracle Network, ARCO, CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates
for Children), and several other organizations;
Ø
Work
with Brookshires/Super 1 Foods to collect and distribute food boxes at
Christmas;
Ø
Sponsor
the Annual Twin City Cottonland Christmas Parade;
Ø
Coordinated
a “Read Around the World” Program in all West Ouachita Elementary Schools
reading to the students and donating books to promote a love of reading and to
encourage parents to read to their children;
Ø
Continued
sponsorship of the West Monroe High School Key Club, West Monroe Junior High
Builders Club, and Highland Elementary K Kids Club;
Ø
Paid
for and installed two “Drive Carefully – Protect Our Children” street
signs for every school zone in West Ouachita Parish.
Ø
Partnered with Monroe Kiwanis Club to fund the Heart Gallery of NELA, a collaborative effort between CASA of NELA and the Adoptions Unit of the Office of Community Services, to ultimately find a permanent family for children in waiting.
Ø
Established the George Daniels Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1000, which is awarded annually to a graduating Key Club member.
The
Kiwanis Club of West Monroe is whatever we want it to be and can do whatever
we want it to do. It is OUR
Kiwanis Club – get involved and make a difference.
Together, we CAN do more. August
2002 will see the Kiwanis Clubs in Northeast Louisiana host the District
Convention for all of Louisiana-Mississippi-West Tennessee – come be part of
the excitement!
